The Impact of Colors in App Design

by Ampify Me May 08, 2020

Hey, you know what's always the top topic in building a business?

Design, design, design...everyone is talking about design, everyone is thinking about design, everyone first creates the design. And what happens in the end - the design and the core of your brand aren't related!

But don't panic. Sometimes it's enough to make one right decision and the inspiration will come along!

Let’s Start With The Basics

An essential part of the mobile app design is the color scheme. When human beings see a color it calls to mind several associations that were established as far back as childhood, says historian and symbologist Michel Pastoureau. A computer displays about 16.8 million colors to create full-color pictures, so picking the right one is not an easy task.

92.6% of people say the visual dimension is the first influencing factor affecting their purchase decision rather than taste, smell, for instance! The right color scheme helps not only set the mood for your app, but it also assists users to interact with certain elements and understand important actions within the app.

There is an infinite number of possible color combinations out there, and the key to picking the right colors for your app is to first understand the basics!

The Psychology Behind Colors

Did you wonder why people easily give up their information to applications like Facebook,  Twitter, LinkedIn, or Skype? It’s because of the color of the sea and sky, the reliability and trust - blue. Maybe that’s the reason why the majority of people always choose blue when it comes to design.

Most of us also like green. It’s the easiest color for the eyes to process. Associated with wealth and nature, many apps for an eco-friendly lifestyle use this color as a basic one.

Red and green are also favorite Christmas colors. Red is intense, important, focused. Google+ must have chosen “Red” to emphasize its speed!

Yellow signifies joy, happiness, betrayal, optimism, idealism, imagination, hope and of course sunshine. When Snapchat chooses “Yellow” for the mobile app icon, it wants to bring a youthful image! Orange is the color of social communication and optimism, It’s stimulating two way conversations. The orange radiates warmth and happiness, combining the physical energy and stimulation of red with the cheerfulness of yellow.

Viber is purple! This beautiful color combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red. It’s often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. In color psychology, pink is a sign of hope. It is a positive color inspiring warm and comforting feelings, a sense that everything will be okay. Used to marked products to the woman and young girls.

How To Choose The Right One?

You should ask yourself three following questions:

  • What colors do other apps in our category use?
  • What colors would people associate with our solution to this problem?
  • What colors would lead to a negative perception of our app?

Some companies use a single color to represent their brand, many other companies use a combination of colors in their logo, however, keep in mind that people prefer simple color schemes that use no more than 3 colors. Whatever is your choice, you need to remember that PWA is here to easily implement your decisions and grow your business. PWA allows you to control how your app appears and how it's launched. You can specify home screen icons, the page to load when the app is launched, screen orientation, whether or not to show the browser chrome, and many other options.

Final Thoughts

Now you know why colors are so important to your mobile app design, use this knowledge to create an awesome one!

No matter which color is your main color, think about everything we have written so far when choosing an app icon. It may become more naturally for customers to interact with it like they do with their favorite apps! Do your research, see what the competition is doing and always think about what impression do you want your app to leave in people.

Good luck!
